Ainslie Mall & Monaro Mall
Universal Design Studio has redesigned the Canberra Centre for Australian retail developer QIC Global Real Estate (QICGRE). The project took four years to complete, revitalizing 158,000 sqft of retail, public space and landscaping in the Central Business District of Canberra, Australia.
The scheme includes restoring and redeveloping the historic 1963 centre, housing both Ainslie and Monaro Malls, with a new masterplan and newly designed facades, interiors and exterior spaces. The original Canberra Centre was built as part of the Australian capital’s Modernist masterplan and is located across the city’s key axis – Ainslie Avenue. Universal’s new design maintains the mall’s significance within the public realm.
The Ainslie Mall offers 3,500 sqm of commercial and public space across two floors comprising new entrances, vertical circulation, floors, walls, balustrades, bulkheads, ceilings, lighting, shopfronts, signage, seating and planting.
Universal transformed the masterplan of the Monaro Mall from mall to mixed-use retail, redesigning all internal and external QICGRE owned areas. Entrances were re-modelled, damaged parts of the original carrara marble facade were restored and 100-metre linear arched canopies were reintroduced providing shade for a new parade of shopfronts.
On the ground floor, the Beauty Arcade offers 800 sqm of beauty departments floor and 1,960 sqm of beauty boutiques. A large, monolithic arcade of honed carrara marble creates 110 lined metres of new internal frontage visually unifying the mall.
