Battersea/London
The Battersea Power Station building is an icon within the London landscape and is being transformed into a new entertainment, cultural and commercial focus for the capital. The Power Station building itself, designed in 1931 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is the spiritual heart of the redevelopment. Universal Design Studio is an integral part of the design team working on this transformation.
Size: - 234,000 sq ft
Client: - Parkview International Ltd
Specification: - Retail, Hospitality, Leisure
Location: - London
Works: - Interior Architecture & unique retail environment
Value: - £50 million
Focusing on the original 1930’s Turbine Hall and Boiler Room, Universal has been commissioned to create a unique retail environment to showcase the best of British and international design. Here it is imperative the character of the building remains at the core of the design approach. Universal have chosen to retain the integrity and clarity of the space and its architectural features.
To maintain the formality of the Turbine Hall, the architectural planning is based on the existing structural grid. An implied grid, breaking each into thirds, has been introduced to provide flexibility. This will be accentuated by clarity of detailing and a mix of rich, new materials. A new sculptured timber landscape will be grafted into the Turbine Hall A to provide a dramatic linear and flexible proscenium.
