On Loop was a participatory installation exploring iterative collective design processes Read More

On Loop highlighted the cumulative nature of progress and experiments with circular co-creation. Like an assembly-line curved back on itself, On Loop introduced elements of swarm intelligence and hive mind into the creative process. The installation built on the notion that evolution is nature’s very own trial-and-error design method and aimed to examine the role of failed creativity. This idea has been interrogated in Henry Petroski’s 1994 book The Evolution of Useful Things in which Petroski explains that the single most important driving force behind technological change is the failure of existing devices to live up to their promise, thus prompting learning and development.

Referencing the surrealist game Exquisite corpse, On Loop sought to layer individual marks on top of each other and make accidental outcomes the foundation of new creations. We envisioned the installation as an evolving design that would become a bearer of traces and marks left by a collective process over the duration of the exhibition. Over the course of thirty one days, visitors were invited to take part in a continuous series of iterative and looping drawing exercises that contributed to an evolving series of designs. As the designs progressed, the rules of engagement altered in response to the process of trial and error, exploring the balance between absolute instruction and free will, and the interplay between the individual and a collective. At key points over the thirty one days, collections of completed designs were displayed within the installation.

Fundamentally, On Loop was designed inspire viewers to interact, explore, and learn. With this in mind, the installation was supported by a series of workshops throughout the course of Archtober. With collaboration fundamental to our approach, we invited a diverse group of New York based artists, designers, makers, academics and technologists to explore to explore the creative possibilities of a collective design process.

On Loop was commissioned for Archtober as part of A/D/O by MINIs exploration on Future Matter.
