The newest store for German luggage manufacturer, RIMOWA, in the heart of Kurfurstendamm, marks an important milestone for the historic brand’s continued evolution since its founding in Cologne in 1898 and its acquisition by LVMH in 2016. As the first boutique in the city, the design introduces the brand in a new context, carefully weaving the city’s own strong identity with the brand’s own development.

We took a gallery-style approach to the 220 sq. m store’s layout designed and completed in only 8 weeks, intentionally leaving aspects of the existing fabric of the listed, period property, while inserting fixtures to act as free-standing sculptures. The display furniture throughout the three rooms simultaneously frames the luggage and celebrates aluminium, a material synonymous with the brand since the 1950s because of its material possibilities and textural beauty. Inspired by RIMOWA’s global campaign film, Never Still, the design deconstructs the moments a suitcase is with you throughout a journey, through the composition of abstract, material vignettes, to create contrasting textural backdrops that transfer segments of Berlin’s urban landscape into the store concept.

The contemporary presentation displays feature products in a way that both invite user interaction and educate customers on the components and materiality of the entire luggage collection. A new accessory wall showcases luggage accessories of varying sizes and materials, providing a spotlight for iconic components that include stickers, coloured wheels, handles and luggage belts. In addition, the store hosts a repair centre, conceived as a laboratory, which is visible from the retail floor and reflects the brand’s commitment to both the product line’s longevity and a lifetime of service. With evolution in mind, fixtures throughout have been kept modular and adaptable, and will be able to host new ranges of product as well as future events and programming.

The smart, contemporary space demonstrates why the brand continues to remain relevant, and provides an opportunity for new and valued customers to gain a first-hand understanding of the brand’s core premise; that expert travellers need expert travel solutions.
